The Fontanelle Cemetery

In Naples ‘ O Campusanto d ‘ ‘e Funtanelle, it is one of the most beautiful and mysterious of Naples. The cemetery, so named because there were springs, is dug into the tufa rock and there you enter the church of Maria Santissima del Carmine,in the district Sanità.

The origin of this sacred place probably dates back to the seventeenth century, when the population was decimated by the plague of Naples and the cemetery received the vittime.A this cemetery is related to the cult of the “Anime pezzentelle”, the anonymous bones and abandoned souls, that They were adopted by the devotees, who dedicated themselves to these rituals and attentions in exchange for aid and fortune.

Palazzo dello Spagnolo

The palace was built starting in 1738 by the will of the Marquis of Poppano, Nicola Moscati, unifying the two previous buildings received with his wife’s dowry. The project is traditionally attributed to the architect Ferdinando Sanfelice. The building is characterized by its original staircase called wing hawk. The interior and exterior were lavishly adorned with a stucco decoration brand clearly Rococo, created by Aniello Prezioso design by Francesco Attanasio in 1742.

The access doors to the apartments are topped sovraporte stucco, with a central medallion with portrait busts. At the end of the eighteenth century the building underwent a renovation that expanded the facility by adding another floor. On the threshold of the nineteenth century, the family was forced to sell the apartments on the first and second floor. The new owner Thomas Atienza, said ‘the Spanish’ from which the naming of the building, did make the room frescoes, now almost entirely lost. Numerous films have had as a background the Palace, one of the last ‘Passion’ by John Turturro.

Le Catacombe di San Gennaro

The Catacombs of San Gennaro are the most important in southern Italy for its breadth and historical value . They consist in fact of two non overlapping levels that follow a pattern of large excavation , horizontal and deep not for a total of 5,600 sq.m. .
